Hong Kong Year-End Music Award Ceremonies

It’s the time of the year again. Hong Kong’s Year-End music awards ceremonies are here already. It is the time for singers to shine and receive their recognitions. And it is the time for me to get excited again. This year, I feel a little bit different towards the award ceremonies, mainly due to the reason that many TVB artists are now in line competing for the awards. It is like a mix of the TVB world and the Hong Kong music arena to me. That fact just seems a bit strange to me…

Speaking about Hong Kong’s year-end music awards, there are mainly four ceremonies that everyone pays attention to. They are 新城勁爆頒獎禮 (Metro Radio Hits Awards), 叱咤樂壇流行榜頒獎典禮 (Chik Chak 903 Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation), 十大勁歌金曲頒獎典禮 (TVB’s Jade Solid Gold Top Ten Awards Presentation), and 十大中文金曲頒獎音樂會 (RTHK Chinese Top Ten Gold Songs Awards).

When I first started catching on the awards back in 2000, I was a bit confused as to what were all these different music ceremonies about. I began to follow the music industry was more or less because of my favorite singer Eason Chan. I still remembered back in 2001 on TVB’s Jade Solid Gold Top Ten Awards Presentation, the hosts of the night Eric Tsang, Jerry Lamb, and Bondy Chiu made a nice comparison between the four ceremonies. I was totally lost back then when I first heard the “comparisons”, but now their words made perfect sense to me.

So, here is my attempt to do my own analysis of the four award ceremonies:

1. 新城勁爆頒獎禮 (Metro Radio Hits Awards)

As suggested by the name, Metro Radio Station is the host of this award ceremony. It is usually held the earliest compared to the other three, and it is usually before the year’s end. For recent years, it has been held either on Christmas Day or on Boxing Day. The most well-known aspect about “Metro Awards” is the big number of awards it gives out each year. It is like almost every singer attending the ceremony will get something. And “Metro” is pretty good at inventing new awards each year to add to the list (like “Best Dancing Song”, “Best Karaoke Song”, etc). Each award categories usually have more than one winner, and none of the awards are ranked (except for the award given out by all four stations – if applicable).

I guess it is really fitting for “Metro” to give out awards on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, since they are like giving away presents to the singers anyways. The show is usually pretty long since there are many awards to pass out. I am not super excited to watch the entire show as some parts are quite boring…

For the last two years, Gold Typhoon Entertainment Limited Music Records Company (used to be known as Gold Label) was engaged in disagreements with Metro Radio Station. Last year, all the singers belong to “Gold Typhoon” were all absent from the award ceremony. However, awards were still given out to them. However for this year, executive of Metro Radio has already said they won’t give any award to “Gold Typhoon’s” singers since the singers are not attending. It is rumored that the cause of all the commotion was because “Gold Typhoon” was upset that Metro Radio seemed to be favoring Eason Chan and Hacken Lee over Leo Ku.

2. 叱咤樂壇流行榜頒獎典禮 (Chik Chak 903 Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation)

This ceremony is usually held on New Year’s Day (Jan 1st). The radio station’s DJs all acted as hosts and usually put on a pretty good show for the event. Famous DJs from this radio station include Sammy Leung and Kitty Yuan. “Chik Chak” is best known for making singers cry (as in really shedding tears). The reason was because “Chik Chak’s” awards are difficult to get as the numbers of awards are limited. Most of the awards are determined by airplays, as in how many times a song is played on the station. Because of that reason, the results of “Chik Chak” are 'deemed to be the most transparent'. However, people have also pointed out that 'it may be a game of favoritism, because the DJs can favor certain singers and play their songs more' (see wiki).

There are ten songs awards, and they are ranked in order. As for singer individual’s awards, each category usually have gold, silver and bronze distinction. There is one group of awards (“Most Favorite Awards") where audience presented at the event vote right there at that time to determine the outcome.

“Chik Chak” is my favorite to watch among the four awards, maybe because the atmosphere is always more intense, and singers are showing their true feelings. Also, singers are allowed to sing the entire song when they win (For individual awards, only gold winners are allowed to sing).

3. 十大勁歌金曲頒獎典禮 (TVB’s Jade Solid Gold Top Ten Awards Presentation)

Now to TVB’s Jade Solid Gold, it is usually held in the weekends, and each year’s date is different. “Jade” is well-known for TVB’s biased awards giving and rigged awards results (well, not all the time). There are always rumors that whenever a singer helps TVB to do something (like film a series or show), he/she will automatically get any award. Also, there is some kind of a rule for TVB’s ceremonies. A singer has to be present at the event to get an award (unless the singer is exempt for approved legitimate reason). Singers who have connections with TVB usually fare better at “Jade”. Well, that is just how it is like…

One of the most prestigious award that Hong Kong media seems to care a whole lot is TVB’s 最受歡迎男/女歌星獎 (Most Popular Artist Awards) and 亞太區最受歡迎香港男/女歌星獎 (Asia Pacific Most Popular Hong Kong artist awards). But for the last couple of years, the awards have been going to the same group of singers.

After “Chik Chak”, this is my next best on my list to catch the show. For one, it is held by TVB. Secondly, the show is usually somewhat entertaining.

4. 十大中文金曲頒獎音樂會 (RTHK Chinese Top Ten Gold Songs Awards)

“RTHK” has the longest history among the four award ceremonies. It usually takes place around mid January, making it as a conclusion to the four music award ceremonies. One of the most discussed awards is the 優秀流行歌手大獎 (Outstanding Singer Award), which are passed out on New Year’s Eve. Usually there are only ten winners, giving the award a nickname of “十優歌手大獎” or in short form “十優” (Ten Outstanding Singer Award). However, for several years, RTHK has to add in one or two winners to accommodate the fierce competition among many prominent singers. It is more of making everyone happy and not wanting to break any ties.

DJs and other famous people are usually invited as the hosts. Like “Chik Chak” and “Jade”, ten songs awards are given out. Many awards are ranked into gold, silver and bronze. A special award that recognizes singers who have impacted the Hong Kong industry throughout the years is the “金針獎” (Gold Needle Award).

Last year, RTHK separated the awards ceremony into two events. The first event passed out one part of the awards. The second event was more of a small concert, and the rest of the awards were given out. I am not sure how they will do this year though.

I usually paid the least attention to “RTHK” awards, since the broadcast of the ceremony is never convenient to me. The only aspect of this ceremony that I concern about is the impact of this ceremony to the singers’ awards count. It is because for the singer(s) who received the most number of awards from all four ceremonies received a special recognition: “四台聯頒獎項 - 傳媒大獎” (Media Award).

I believe “East Asia Music” singers won’t be appearing at the music ceremony this year, just like what “Gold Typhoon” singers are doing to “Metro” awards. News reported that it is because of the unfavorable treatment hocc (Denise Ho) received last year.

News about the music awards are reported like everyday since the start of November. It seemed to me that the focus of this year is placed more on the newcomers, including TVB’s four artists: Wong Cho Lam, Bosco Wong, Myolie Wu, and Linda Chung. Another focus is on Kay Tse and her popular song 囍帖街 (Invitation Street).

Also, it seemed like more and more music companies are taking action to boycott the music ceremonies because their singers did not receive award. I just hope that this trend will stop since it is not much fun for singers to be absent when their fans are hoping for them to present to receive awards.

Now, I am eager to see how 2008’s music report cards unfold…

TVB 41st Anniversary Extravaganza Roundup

TVB’s 41st Anniversary Extravaganza was held on Wednesday November 19th, 2008. I have been rewatching the show for the past week. Actually, it’s been awhile since an Anniversary Extravaganza was attractive enough to make me rewatch it. This year’s Anniversary Extravaganza reminded me of some of the “old days”.

At the very beginning, Sir Shaw Run Run (Uncle Six), accompanied by Liza Wang and Dodo Cheng at his sides, helped kick off the night by inserting a happy face coin into a box shaped like the TVB logo. That officially initiated the start of the show. A round of dances quickly followed.

This year, the theme of the opening was “Western and Chinese Dances”. Attending artists divided into different groups in displaying their dance moves. Bosco Wong and Joyce Cheng led the first group. Second group consisted of Charmaine Sheh, Ron Ng, Sammul Chan, and many others; third group had Susanna Kwan, Michelle Yim, Wayne Lai, etc. (with a brief showcase of TVB veterans), and the fourth group had Ha Yu, Kevin Cheng, Raymond Lam, and others. The dances then combined into a big group dance at the TVB’s outdoor area.

This year’s emcees only consisted of six members, including Liza Wang, Eric Tsang, Dodo (Carol) Cheng, Nat Chan, Sharon Chan, and Amigo Chiu. It’s a bit odd to me that there were only six of them. I would have thought TVB like to have at least eight emcees (as eight is a lucky number). And I did notice that Anna Yau, who is a usual emcee for the past years, was not there. And what about Tang Chi Fung?

The first performance of the night was “生日彈高GO GO GOAL” (Birthday Jump High Go Go Goal). The first four Chinese characters also share the same sounding as “Birthday Cake”. The performers included Timmy Hung, Francois Huynh, Stephen Huynh, Charles Szeto, Sharon Luk, Elaine Yiu, Vin Choi, and several others. The entire performance was done on two trampolines. First, the girls and Vin did some simple tricks on the trampolines, with acts such as rope jumping and somersault. Then, four guys (with Timmy Hung as the lead) bounced off the trampolines using their backs while “painting” Chinese words on the wall. They wrote “如日中天”, which meant “like the sun at noon”. At the end, Eric Tsang concluded the performance by placing a missing “fire” to a non-lighted candle of a birthday cake on the wall.

The second performance was “街頭熱啡雨中舞” (Hot Coffee Street Dance in the Rain). The song “Hot Coffee” is one of Liza’s famous songs. In TVB’s 27th Anniversary Extravaganza, Liza had done a memorable “Hot Coffee” Dance. This year, she led a group of dance talents for a wet hip-hop dance. The first song used for the background music of the dance was “Hot Coffee”. It was a refreshing performance to watch, and Liza Jie and everyone else did a great job. The floor got a bit too slippery though after the performance.

The performance afterwards was “金鑽情歌忘不了” (The Unforgettable Golden Love Songs). Four “onscreen” couples were brought together to sing golden love songs. Kevin Cheng and Charmaine Sheh sang two songs 難得有情人 and 只有情永在 together. Afterwards, three pairs of “onscreen” couples from different eras came out to sing the theme/sub-theme songs of their respective past shows/series. Shek Sau and Maggie Li sang the theme song of their old series “心有千千結”. Ng Wai Kwok and Lui Yau Wai performed 巫山盟’s subtheme 田園春夢. They are followed by Wu Fung and Ng Kwun Lai’s 青青河邊草. The four couples then sang 愛在心內暖 to conclude the segment.

The next one ”扮嘢天王福祿壽” (The Three "Impersonating" Kings) was favored by many. The three great impersonators Louis Yuen, Wong Cho Lam, and Johnson Lee are back with another round of fun and laughs. Last year, they transformed into Rain, Jolin Tsai, Chris Wong and others. This year, they incorporated different elements to combine into an interesting show.

The performance could be divided into four parts. In the first part, the three of them transformed into 四朵金花 – TVB’s Four Golden Flowers singing their traditional theme song (Louis as Lydia Shum, Johnson as Liza Wang, Wong Cho Lam as Teresa Cheung, “Fake Person” as Wong Oi Ming). Louis mentioned in the Scoop interview that he wanted to pay tribute to Fei Jie. One thing to also note is that they incorporated names of TVB’s executives into the song.

The second part of the show involved Johnson Lee as Andy Lau singing 神鵰大俠 and 世間始終你好 (songs from The Return of the Condor Heroes 1983 and The Legend of the Condor Heroes 1983). Johnson’s voice really resembled Andy’s voice. As for Wong Cho Lam, he appeared as a super chubby Condor, flapping his wings and imitating a shouting sound of the bird. As for Louis, he became a hunter aiming an arrow at the Condor Cho Lam. The scene was quite hilarious.

The third part was more of an “a cappella” parody show. They introduced themselves as “The Three Brothers”. Toward the very end of the third part, they imitated the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics theme song “You and Me” rendered by Liu Huan and Sarah Brightman. Wong Cho Lam’s attempted woman voice was very convincing.

The final part showcased TVB’s 2008 series “Moonlight Resonance”. A few clips from the series were showing while the three of them changed clothes behind the scene. Later, the three of them came out, dressed up as Louise Lee’s “Hor Ma” (Louis), Michelle Yim’s “Hong Yee” (Wong Cho Lam), and Susanna Kwan’s “Sa Yee” (Johnson). They did a rap involving the golden phrases from the series, with changes the meaning to some of the phrases to reflect the TVB Anniversary Awards 2008. For example, they mentioned about Ha Yu getting the award and laughing all day now, no one listening to Liza (Ah Jie) anymore, Sonija’s dress, etc. One interesting to note is that their final line (林峰下年又係你 – Raymond next year will be you again) was accompanied by a tune that was similar to the last line of the theme song of “Moonlight Resonance” (原本無心害你). They wrapped up the show by a group tap dancing.

歌舞青春Mega Show (Dancing and Singing Mega Show) came next. I thought TVB has promised a “rumored couple performance” involving Boscolie (Bosco Wong and Myolie Wu) and Rayda (Raymond Lam and Linda Chung). However, it turned out that it was more of a showcase of their (new) talents in the Hong Kong music industry. The show (supposedly) displayed how TVB artists are not only good at acting, but they can be great in dancing and singing as well (as in versatile). The participating artists are Raymond Lam, Myolie Wu, Bosco Wong, Linda Chung, and Patrick Tang. The show began with everyone singing Eason Chan’s 演唱會 (Live Concert). Then, they all did their solo dancing and singing. Raymond’s solo was Jay Chou’s 霍元甲; Myolie’s was Joey Yung’s 跑步機上; Bosco’s was the music group Soft Hard’s 廣播道FANS殺人事件; Linda’s was Kelly Chen’s 花花宇宙; Patrick’s was Alan Tam’s 傲骨 (in the order of their appearances). The show concluded with the five of them singing Eason’s演唱會 (Live Concert) again.

The final show of the night was the annual Anniversary Skit - 台慶劇：家好月圓之店長招募大行動. This year’s theme is “Moonlight Resonance”. The story went like Jo Bao wanted to open the 41st bakery, and Hor Ma, Hong Yee, and Sa Yee accompanied him to look for a place. They have decided to purchase that place, and they needed to hire people. So in coming three candidates: Eric Tsang’s “傻媽 - Saw Ma”, Moses Chan’s “聾姨 - Long Yee”, and Bosco Wong’s “Bo Bee Wong”. All there of them have someone attached to their backs, with those mysterious people as the hands of the three men. Charmaine was behind Eric, Christine Ng was behind Moses, while Myolie was behind Bosco. The three of them were tested by the bosses.

As like previous years, the skit was quickly turned into chaos. People started to throw cakes and cream at each other, and Eric, as always, started to mess with people. He “attacked” Susanna twice and Ha Yu once. At the end, it was a huge mess. Even Nat Chan, not part of the show to start with, came up to “attack” Louise. Overall, they weren’t too many funny spots in the skits. But I did have some laughs here and there. I especially liked the part when Myolie kept hitting Bosco’s chest.

The entire show ended with giving off the final big prizes, cutting the birthday cake, and distributing the champagne. The prizes winners this year are Grace Wong, Shirley Yeung, and Charmaine Sheh. And Nat Chan ended the show by saying “we will see you guys in next year’s anniversary”. I don’t know if it was just me, but I felt like the “goodbye” at the end was a bit abrupt and short.

Overall Comments:

I am quite satisfied with the show this year. At least there were more “real” performances involved, and we could see TVB artists put in effort practicing to celebrate for TVB’s birthday. However, there seemed to be more spots where no one was talking. Perhaps we needed more emcees? Also, Tommy Leung seemed to be quite unhappy the entire night. What’s up with him?

Anyways, now we have entered TVB’s 42nd year. What kind of surprises will be waiting for us?

Anticipating Wars of In-Laws II...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! Hope that everyone has had a wonderful Christmas! I have originally planned a lot of posts since December 1st, but I never have the time to actually write them. Oh well...

Well, part of the reasons that I never have time to devote to TVB Cafe is because of the effort I spent working on my Boscolie fansite. Some people who know me online probably know that I am a big fan of Boscolie since WOIL I. And of course I am extra excited about the upcoming series "Wars of In-Laws II"!

"Wars of In-Laws II" is going to premiere on TVB Regular Jade Channel and TVB HD Jade Channel on January 1st at 8:30 p.m.. WOIL II will be the first hour-long TV series to be aired on TVB's HD Jade Channel. WOIL II is coming our way really soon.

I know some people are not looking forward to this series, and will even skip it. I understand the reasons too. Some people think that the first one (WOIL I) was overrated. The actings were exaggerations, while the storyline was not good. I must admit that I do not love every part of WOIL I, but this series will always be on my list of favorite TVB series. I have started to be fond of the series since its costume fitting. Not sure why, but I think I have a special bond with this series since its first days of production.

One of the reasons that I like WOIL I is of course because of the couple Bosco and Myolie. And I can't deny that fact. Of course when I found out that TVB will film a sequel to WOIL I using the original cast (Liza, Bosco and Myolie), I was super happy! I have been following all the news of the series since the day they announced the filming of this sequel. And now, my wait is almost over! =)

Happy Birthday to TVB!

Yet another year has passed, and TVB is officially 40th years old! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TVB! As TVB steps into the 41th year, I want to wish TVB continue to succeed in various areas. And I hope TVB continue to bring audiences happiness and surprises each and every day!

I have finally completed my GMAT test last Saturday. I can seriously relax a bit after the test. Also, this week is Thanksgiving week, and I only have one more regular classes next week. That means I can devote to TVB-related stuff more as December arrives. Frankly speaking, I haven't watched any new TVB series for a long time. I really want to do some catching up during this Christmas holiday.

I have just finished watching this year's "Anniversary Gala" show, and I must say I am a bit disappointed in quite a lot of things. I won't say much now, since I am going to write my reviews on the three Anniversary shows this year starting on Wednesday. Remember to check back! =)

My Last Minute Thoughts on 2007 TVB Anniversary Awards...

I almost cannot believe that the TVB Anniversary Awards 2007 is happening tonight (Nov 17) in Hong Kong! Time sure flies, and I am so behind in guessing this year's winners. But here I am now to do some last minute predictions. Read on if you want to find out about my thoughts...

My Predictions and Picks:

Best Actor:
My Prediction - Moses Chan/Bobby Au Yeung
My Pick - Moses Chan

Thoughts: I have always envisioned Moses of getting the award this year after the success of "Heart of Greed". However, with the recent popularity of Bobby getting into the top 5 finalist of International Emmy and TVB's attention to it, there have been reports about a chance for Bobby to get the "Best Actor" to indicate TVB's appreciation to Bobby. I just hope that Moses can win because I think he deserves it.

Best Actress:
My Prediction - Susanna Kwan/Louise Li
My Pick - Susanna Kwan

Thoughts: Frankly speaking, I haven't had a chance to watch "Heart of Greed", so I really can't judge in terms of acting between Susanna and Louise. However, I want to pick Susanna Kwan because my instinct told me to. And, I am also suspecting TVB pulling a special move regarding this year's Best Actress. A "double-crowning" is possible, although it has never happened before. Let's just wait and see.

That's it from me. I simply can't wait to watch the Awards Ceremony and the Anniversary Show! In terms of awards, I don't have much to look forward this year b/c I haven't watched most of the competing series and shows, however, I am still equally interested!
I am taking the GMAT on Nov 17th. Afterwards, I will be less busy, so hopefully I can update more often from that point on. I hope to come back soon to post up my thoughts after the awards have taken place. And also I am going to share my thoughts about the Anniversary show. Check back later! =)

Jade Singers Celebrate TVB Anniversary 2007 Updates

I just read the news today from MingPao relating to this year's "Jade Singers Celebrate TVB Anniversary", and I really want to blog about it. TVB held a press conference and promotion event yesterday and revealed the details about the event. The details are as follow:

- The event will be held on November 3rd, and it will be hosted by Dodo (Carol) Cheng 鄭裕玲 and Eric Tsang 曾志偉.

- Alan Tam 譚詠麟 and Teresa Carpio 杜麗莎 will be the captains for the male singers and female singers respectively.

- Leo Ku and Andy Hui will be the leaders for the male singers, while Miriam Yeung and Joey Yung are the leaders for the female singers.

- Many top singers will most likely be absent from the event. Kelly Chen might not attend because she did not renew her contract with TVB recently. Hacken might also be absent because he is expecting his baby around that time. As for Andy Lau, he may not be in Hong Kong during that time, while Eason Chan will be holding his concert at the coliseum that day.

- Last year's host Lui Fong will not take part this year because of a conflict in his filming schedule.

My thoughts:

I am really disappointed about the fact that many top singers will miss this year's event. I was especially looking forward to the "Jade Singers" this year (since I loved last year's), but I was just treated with disappointment. I hope that those that will attend will at least put up a good show for us audience. But I definitely will not hold high hopes now...

About the allocation of team captains and leaders, I am not satisfied with the male side. Oh well...couldn't expect more since Andy, Hacken, and Eason will most likely be absent.

TVB’s 40th Anniversary: My Predictions to the “Anniversary Special”

Haha…time sure flies, since TVB’s 40th Anniversary will be arriving in a little more than a month. I am already super excited about all the upcoming anniversary-related shows, although I have a major exam (GMAT) on November 17th (the night of the Anniversary awards), but I am still looking forward to everything.

The Webmasters of TVB-related blogs and sites around the net are all giving out their favorites and predictions in the past few days, and more are to come. I really enjoy reading them too, but I am here to do something different though. I just want to guess what’s going to happen on the night of the “Anniversary Special” on November 19th before any confirmed news are announced. Follow along if you want to find out what my “wild” guesses may be:

(1) Opening
I am 99.9% sure that the show will begin with Sir Run Run Shaw (Uncle Six) initiating some kind of object to light up the studio, and starting the event. As for what is he initiating this year, I guess it will be a ruby, because it symbolizes 40 years anniversary. (And I got that hint from the Anniversary Lighting Ceremony)

I hope that in the opening, there will be some kind of big dance like usual for all participants of the night to be a part of it. And I am guessing one of the background songs to be used will be originally sung by Twins. (Why? Because for the past 5 years except in 1, one of the background songs used for the openings were originally sung by Twins. For 2002 and 2003, it was 大紫大紅. In 2004, it was 夏日狂嘩. As for last year (2006), the song used was 熱浪假期. I know probably I am the only one who keeps track of this trend…lol…And if you don’t believe in me, grab the older anniversaries and watch the openings…)

(2) Anchors (Hosts/Hostesses)
There are currently no indications that Lydia Shum (Fei Jie) will be back as anchor for the anniversary special. She was absent from her usual role in last year’s anniversary, and this year’s Children Songs Awards Ceremony. I certainly hope that she is well enough to make appearance, but I guess we have to wait and see.

My guesses on the Hosts/Hostesses: Liza Wang, Dodo (Carol) Cheng, Eric Tsang, Nat Chan, Tang Chi Fung, Amigo Choi, Anna Yau, and Lawrence Cheng.

(3) Anniversary Skit
Almost every year’s anniversary includes a comical anniversary skit. I am 100% sure there will be one this year. As for what is it going to be about, here are my guesses:

- Heart of Greed
Still remember in the year of 2004 when “War of Beauty” was such a big hit, it was transformed into an anniversary skit? Do you remember how Eric Tsang, Lydia Shum, Nat Chan, Nancy Sit and Dodo Cheng all dressed up as the characters in “War of Beauty”? That’s why I picked “Heart of Greed” as my first choice for the theme of the skit. I will not be surprised if TVB invite the original cast of Heart of Greed to perform a newly invented scene from the series, or ask a new group of artists to act the parts of the originals.

- Men Don’t Cry
“Men Don’t Cry” is one of the three anniversary series this year. Since the casts of this series had already performed in the Lighting Ceremony, I think the chance for them to do the anniversary skit is not likely. But Dayo is a perfect candidate to create some laughs, so I don’t want to count this series out.

(4) Dances
Dances are always key elements in each year’s anniversary. I don’t think there were any past anniversaries without some form of dance performances. And since “Steps” has created a buzz lately, I won’t be surprise to see the casts, or someone else, follow up what they did in the Lighting Ceremony.

(5) Games
Of course as usual, TVB’s artists will be broken into 2-3 groups and compete for the final grand prizes. Last year’s games were based on 15/16, being one of the most successful shows produced last year. As for this year, I am guessing it will have something to do with the new entertainment show “Foodie 2 Shoes 味分高下” hosted by Patrick Tang and Harlem Yu. Although this show has not gathered too much successes beside it’s first week of above average ratings, it does grab some media attention, especially with all the complains received from viewers about the “gross” foods the show is “feeding” the guests. I certainly hope that if they do use similar elements from “Foodie 2 Shoes,” nothing gross will appear as Uncle Six will definitely be unhappy.

My other bet is for Eric Tsang or Sammy Leung to hold some kind of “past” TVB games, like “Lucky Stars” from EYT (Enjoy Yourself Tonight), Super Trio’s games, or 15/16 games.

(6) Beijing Olympics 2008
In case anyone not know, the summer Olympics 2008 will be taken place in Beijing, China, in August 2008. Hong Kong is granted by China to hold all the equestrian (horses) events. TVB has already mentioned a lot about broadcasting Olympics 2008 using the new HD technology. I won’t be surprise if there is a performance on the night of the Anniversary dedicated to Olympics 2008.

History has shown me that I may be right, since in 2003, Roger and Jessica were teamed up with Shek Sau, his son, and others to “demonstrate different sports” as allusions to Olympics 2004. In 1999, Vinci Wong and others did something similar as well.

I have just made several “predictions” to what might happen in the Anniversary Special. Not sure how many of them will I get right, but check back after the anniversary to see me grade myself! =)

TVB Children Songs Awards Ceremony 2007

Does anyone remember my post last year regarding "TVB Children Songs Award Presentation"? I can't believe an entire year has gone by already, and the TVB Children Songs Awards Ceremony 2007 has just taken place in Hong Kong last Saturday on August 25th. Just like most other years, the ceremony is aimed to give out awards to ten voted best children songs, along with shows and presentations. There are also other awards given out, such as the "Best Lyrics" and "Most Favored by Dad and Mom" awards. This year is no different. There are totally 25 new songs competing for the "Top Ten Awards", and another group of older songs competing for a separate "Best Children Song out of all years" award.

The results are as follows:

My Views:

First off, congratulations to the winners!

As you can see, the winners are heavily dominated by TVB's own artists. Of course there are news about TVB fixing the awards themselves. Oh well, it is just a children awards show for kids to have fun. I personally don't really care as long as TVB continues to hold this event. As for the results, those were what I expected them to be. I am just a bit surprise that TVB did not give an award to Ron Ng. And out of the 25 new songs, I only have heard Ray's, Bernice and Myolie's, Charmaine's, the EEG group's and Angela Tong's. I personally really like Ray's.

And I must say a BIG congratulation to Nnadia Chan (Chung Chung Jie Jie)! She totally deserved that award! She has had so many children songs over the years, and it is so glad that she got some recognition after so many years!

I haven't gotten a chance to watch the show myself. Actually, I have watched the 2006 ceremony just weeks ago. But I have just seen the opening at youtube, and I must say I like it so far. They are trying to bring back a lot of the old faces from the past, and I am so happy to see Lawrence Cheng back as a host of the show! He has been a host for "Children Songs" awards for many years before Lydia Sum (Fei Jei) took over. Now that Lydia cannot participate, I am so glad that TVB invited Lawrence back as host!

I am also really happy to see many of the past anchors of the children shows back in "Children Songs" awards too! Seemed like this year's show will bring back lots of my childhood memories. Can't wait to watch the full show!

X'mas Special: Finding X'mas Elements in TVB Series

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!!! Wishing everyone a fun-filled Christmas, and also getting lots of gifts and presents!!! On this Christmas day of mine, I decide to write an article related to Christmas, kind of making up for my lack of updates recently...

So, on the top of your head, can you think of any TVB series that contain Christmas elements in them? Throughout the past 39 years, I don't think TVB has filmed any series specifically relating to Christmas, but there were definitely Christmas moments in several series.

Some that I can think of on the top of my head include:

- "Kindred Spirit": I remembered there was a big Christmas party in one of the earlier episodes. Many people attended, but the focus on the party was between the love triangle of Angie Cheung, Ben Wong, and Mark Kwok. Do anyone recall that scene when Mark kissed Angie on the cheek during the party?

- "At the Threshold of an Era II": I recalled a scene when Roger helped Ada to decorate her apartment for Christmas. I also remembered a scene when Gallen's family celebrated Christmas together.

- "Survivor's Law": I remembered watching a scene of a Christmas party, when Sammul and Myolie appeared as a pair, and Raymond and Bernice spent their time together. As for the details...I have to rewatch SL!

- "Green Hope": The first episode started off on a Christmas day, when Stephen Fung and his friends headed to a mall to perform a Christmas play.

There should be much much more, but I can't remember on the top of my head. haha...anyways, Merry Christmas once again!!! =)

Holiday Seasons are here...

Without updating post, I went ahead and change the layout once again...*feeling guilty*...but oh well, this one is preparing for Christmas and New Year...I have also changed the layout to a two-column format, testing out to see if it works fine...

I think I have added all the new affiliates, but if I missed you, remember to tag me again, as I have quite short-termed memory these days...

I have been busy working on re-builing my other sites this week, because my last host expired and never warned us beforehand. I had to rebuild my two fanlistings and my art portfolio sites. Anyways, enough of my ramblings. Normal updates will be resume on Friday December 15th. See you then! =)

Another New Layout

A new layout...simply need to change the old one since it's after the 39th anniversary already...I didn't have much time to work on the layout since I have four final exams this week...but hopefully it looks alright...featuring my two favorite TVB actresses...=)

I should be resuming work on the music sheets after next Thursday (my Accounting Final)...so until then...TVB Cafe will not have much updates...but stay tune...

Happy Birthday to TVB!!!

After watching last year's anniversary, I have been anticipated for this year's anniversary for 365 days already. And now it's finally here, I want to wish TVB "Happy Birthday" of course...ah...39 years passed already since 1967's opening...

Since I have DirectTV's Jadeworld channels, I was able to see "TVB 39th Anniversary Gala" tonight through "satellite". Since awards are left out this year, everything just seemed different. It's great that the "celebration" feeling is back, but something is still missing. Personally, I have a collection of the anniversary shows dated back to 1994. I have seen anniversary shows without the awards (since awards didn't start until 1997), but back then, there were more performances and more people attended. This year's one just...I don't know...

But now that everything is passed, of course we have to look forward now. The sales presentation released today looked somewhat promising. Simply can't wait to see some of the series, and what lies ahead...

Before I end this post, I'll include some pictures from today's anniversary gala show that I found quite representative. And also as a preview, I will be writing an article comparing this year's three anniversary shows (Singers, Awards, and Gala). Coming soon!!! (oh, and new layout coming soon as well)

Updates on the 39th Anniversary (Part IV)

Taking a break from my studying as well as recaping the awards ceremony...

Yesterday, I chanced upon the scans from the most recent edition of TVB Weekly, and saw two pages that talked about the performances parts on the Anniversary night (Nov 19th).

Based on the scans, there will be five performances for the night:

1. "Beautiful Cooking" Anniversary edition. The contestants for the night will be Dodo (Carol) Cheng, Liza Wang, and Nancy Sit. They will be cooking all kind of expansive food like Abalone, Shark fin, etc. Bosco Wong, Kevin Cheng, Roger Kwok, and Ron Ng will be the assistant cooks, while Nat Chan and Hui Goon Man will be the judges for the night.

2. "Dances from the Men". Ten TVB actors will be doing different dance moves, and may even transform themselves into women for the dances. Participants include Eric Tsang, Lam Man Chung, Chiang Chi Kwong, Yuen Siu Cheung, Tang Chi Fung, Lai Lok Yi, Matthew Ko, Vin Choi, Charles Szeto, Kenneth Ma, and more.

3. "15/16" Anniversary edition. Eric Tsang and Nat Chan will be the hosts for this special edition "15/16", and the contestants will be the 39 actors and actresses that are chosen earlier in another drawing event.

4. "Jade Stars Museum". Several TVB stars will pretend to be "wax statues" and be criticized and picked on by Nat Chan, Eric Tsang, and Dodo (Carol) Cheng about their rumors and news. The stars are not supposed to move as they are "wax statues". The participating stars include Moses Chan, Bernice Liu, Bosco Wong, Bowie Lam, Sonijia Kwok, Kenny Wong, Gigi Lai, Yoyo Mung, Charmaine Sheh, and Myolie Wu.

5. "Drum Music Celebrating Long Life". A big group of TVB stars will be performing different drum music and rhythms to celebrate for TVB's birthday. The stars performing include: Nat Chan, Fala Chan, Kenny Wong, Tracy Yip, Chu Wai Man, Sharon Luk, Winnie Shum, and many more.

My Comments: What happened to "All About Men" vs "Lady in Red"? Could it be that the singers (like Hacken, Eason, Miriam) are not "willing" to show up, so TVB cancel the event altogether? (oh no...bad news for me...)
And what's up with Nat Chan participating in four events? I just don't like to see his arrogant face all the time...oh my...

Recap to TVB 39th Anniversary Awards Ceremony (Part I)

TVB 39th Anniversary Awards Ceremony was successfully held Friday night, and all the awards were giving out to their new owners. Of course the winners list is out, and most people's reactions would include "surprised" in their descriptions...whatever the case is, I am going to write a somewhat "long" recap on the night's event, giving you another perspective of the event with my screen-caps and words...

here we begin...

The night began with TVB stars arriving and walking across the red carpet. Most appeared in groups of four, similar to last year's event.

As the camera brought us to the interior of Studio 1, our MC of the night Dodo (Carol) Cheng was standing in the center of the stage waiting. After her welcoming speech, she presented a group of TVB artists who played a song as an orchestra together. Stars part of the orchestra included, Vivien Yeo (Piano), Astrid Chan (Electronic Piano), Charles Szeto (E. Piano), Mak Nga Gi (E. Piano), Chik Doi Doi (Guita), Law Mong (Guitar), Tang Chi Fung (Guitar), Vin Choi (Guitar), Heidi Chu (Flute), Leanne Li (Flute), Erica Yuan (Violin), and Tracy Yip (Violin). It was a creative idea for TVB to ask TVB stars to perform music. And overall, their performance was average.

As the music was playing, the awards contestants of the night entered the studio by pairs. One thing to notice is Kevin and Charmaine came out together. Perhaps this was TVB's intention of showing us early who's would eventually be the winners for "Best Actor" and "Best Actress"...

Sure took sometime for everyone to come out. And when they finally settled in their seats at the side of the center stage, the night of recognition officialy began. This year, there are really three parts to the stage. The left side was the sitting areas for TVB stars, while the centers stage was for performance and presenting awards. As for the mini right side was a place when Dodo (Carol) Cheng stood at most of the night.

The first award presented for the night was "Most Improved Actress Award". Michael Miu was the award presenter, and he did a little advertisement for his new series "Dicey Business" to be aired on November 20th (the day after Anniversary). The final top 5 for "Most Improved Actress Award" included Linda Chung, Selena Li, Tavia Yeung, Leila Tong, and Natalie Tong.

The winner was Linda Chung. Her acceptance speech included, "Thanks Brother Three (Michael). Thank you TVB, Catherine Tsang, Tommy Leung, Virginia Lok, Pui Wa for giving me a lot of opportunities. Thanks to my parents for supporting me, my brother and sister for caring me. Thanks to my friends in Vancouver and Hong Kong. Thanks to my fans. I know I still have a lot of things to be improved on. I will continue to work hard. Thank you!" Overall, she looked really calm and composed.

Next up was "Most Improved Actor Award". Dou Man Chak (the actor who played Sau Keung in Infernal Affairs) was the award presenter. He talked about his award he accepted from a Germany awards ceremony, and the award was made of ice. He said the "Ice Award" had melted after he reached his hotel room. The "Ice Award" was to symbolize that awards recipients should forget about their awards as soon as possible since they have to continue to work hard and try to get another award in the future. The top 5 for "Most Improved Actor" included Kenneth Ma, Kevin Cheng, Steven Ma, Michael Tze, Kenny Wong.

Dou Man Chak made fun of Ronald Cheng before he said Kenneth's name. Kenneth was really shocked and surprised. As he was sitting beside Ron and Bosco, the duo congratulated Kenneth at once. When Kenneth received the award from Dou Man Chak, he said, "I am really nervous tonight, not because of worrying about award, but because I have to perform an Indian dance later. I want to thank TVB, Stephen Chan, Virginia Lok, Tommy Leung. Thank you to all the producers, directors and PA for using me in their series. I want to thank all the workers in the department for costumes and make-up." Then he paused, apparently distracted by Dou Man Chak. When Kenneth resumed his speech, he stuttered for awhile before continued, "Thanks to my fans! Thanks to all my co-stars from this four series. Thanks to all who have taught me before. I especially want to thank Roger Kwok. At last, I want to thank my family, including my father, my two elder sisters and especially my mother. And I want to add that tonight is my cousin's wedding, and I can't attend his wedding. I want to wish him a 'Happy and Long-lasting Marriage!' Thank you, Thank you!"
He received the loudest and longest applauses compared to all other award recipient. (You deserve it Kenneth!)

Pre-TVB 39th Anniversary Awards Night

We’re down to the final home stretch…anyone besides the contestants, and me are excited??? =)
With few hours left before the ceremony begins, I will now do a round of “Pre-TVB 39th Anniversary Awards Night” wrap-up…

Just Some Background Info:

The Anniversary Awards Ceremony to be taken place tonight (in HK time) in Hong Kong will mark the 10th year of TVB’s awards presentation. Inspired by ATV’s year-end awards, TVB decided to launch their own awards ceremony in 1997, giving recognition to actors and actresses, as well as background crew members that provide efforts to the ultimate success to TVB series. Since 1997, TVB awards have become a tradition, while creating yet another topic for Hong Kong (and overseas) fans to be excited about.

This year…

What's so special about this year's awards ceremony is that it is TVB's first ever stand alone anniversary awards ceremony ever, resulting in three different shows in celebrating TVB's anniversary this year. Is it a good thing or bad thing? Well...you never know...everything has to have a beginning...

As far as I know, there will be one performance on the awards night, which is a dance done by Kenneth Ma, Kenny Wong, Fala Chan, Sharon Luk, etc. As for the MC for the night, it will be Carol (Dodo) Cheng.

"Jade Singers Celebrate TVB Anniversary" has successfully taken place in Hong Kong on last Saturday night. Quite sad for me, the male singers (red team) picked up the victory this year. I guess Leon Lai's appearance helped push it a bit...By the way, Sidney has written a review about the show. Head over to her blog to read it: TVB Sidsation

Updates on the 39th Anniversary (Part II)

An article from orisun today reported about some confirmed news of the Anniversary show on November 19th.

First of, the confirmed hosts and hostesses (MCs) for that night are as follows:
Eric Tsang, Nat Chan, Dodo(Carol) Chang, Liza Wang, Amigo Chui and Anna Yau.

*Lydia Shum will be absent from her usual role this year due to her illness.

Next, several performing and entertaining parts for the night are confirmed. Here they are:

A special edition of "Beautiful Cooking" will be held live in the show. This time, the contestants are all "Ah Jie(s)"(Big Sisters), including Liza Wang, Dodo(Carol) Chang, and Nancy Sit. They will be cooking all kinds of expansive food, such as abalone and shark fin.

With the releases of the two albums "All About Men" and "Lady in Red" in the past two years, the singers from both albums will finally have a chance to come together and perform. On the night of the anniversary, the "Men" and the "Women" will be "competing" with each other.

During one part, Actors and Actresses will have to pretend as "wax statues", and be "criticized" and "picked on" by the hosts and hostesses about their rumors and news.

My thoughts:
So sad to see Fei Jie (Lydia Shum) to be absent from her usual hostess role, and also most likely absent from the entire show as well. Just so used to seeing her every year at the Anniversary...hope that she will get well soon! As for the performing and entertaining parts, I am especially looking forward to the "All About Men" VS "Lady in Red". Must be really fun! =)

PS: So happy to see TVB Cafe reaches 10000 hits today! Don't have much plan to celebrate, but still, I am happy! Thanks for the support to those who are reading my posts...=)

Anniversary Series: To Grow with Love

One of this year’s anniversary series “To Grow with Love” (aka Lush Fields Happy Times or Fei Tin Hei See) will be aired starting tomorrow October 23rd in Hong Kong. After many promotions, this series will finally be brought to the center stage.

My Critiques and Thoughts:

I am not ready to give out my predictions and picks yet, but here I will state some of my thoughts on this year's nomination list...

-- How the nomination are distributed from the series are not representative enough. Almost all nominations from LWOLAP are missing, and also other series have too many nominations, while others only have a few. Perhaps ratings have to do with this factor...

-- Besides, the arrangement for some of the awards are strange. For example, why would King Sir be qualified for running in "Best Actor" with his character in "Welcome to the House", but not qualified in the "Favorite Character Award"?

-- Glad to see the "Favorite Character" and "Best Series" back! But how many "Favorite Characters" will be chosen? And also, why don't TVB bring back the "Best Couple" award? Certainly a lot of people (including me) miss it!

-- As many have noticed, TVB has included previous "Best Improved" receivers, like Tavia Yeung, Ron Ng, and Shirley Yeung, back into running for the same award again. Why does TVB want to do that?

-- Kind of strange for TVB to put At17, Sammi and Siu Yi, as well as the hosts for "Beautiful Cooking" in the nominations for "Most Improved"...

-- And for the award ceremony on the November 10th, will the format similar to "Oscar Award", like last year's?

39th Anniversary Lighting Ceremony

TVB 39th Anniversary Month "officially" begins today as Sir Shaw Run Run and 100 TVB artists presented in the "Lighting Ceremony". The group picture is very similar compared to last year's, with Sir Run Run in the middle, accompanied by Liza Wang and Dodo Chang at his sides. The first row is once again dominated by all actresses, with "important" actors follow closely behind in the second row. The casts from "Pearl of Orient" (Lisa Wang, Charmaine Sheh and Roger Kwok) performed a dance, while casts from "Welcome to the House" did a comedy performance. Singers like Joey Yung and Leo Ku are also presented.

And...The Slogan for this year's Anniversary is...

The English translation means: Being in front, Wonderful 39 years!

Blood-related Relatives Part III

The third installment of "Blood-related Relatives" is finally here! Sure took me awhile...but here are them...

Lai Suen and Gigi Lai
Series together before: Not sure...
Relationship: Aunt and Niece (Gigi's father is Lai Suen's brother)

Thoughts: Lai Suen's father actually was a really famous actor awhile ago, and the Lai family has gained a lot of fame throughtout the years. Gigi is actually the third generation of the Lai family in the showbiz industry. Do you recall Gigi said something in 37th anniversary after she received the "Best Actress Award" about her family? She was referring to "keeping the fame" in the Lai Family with her own effort (getting the award).

Kong Yan Yin and Liz Kong Hei Man (Kong Yan Chi)
Series together before: The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre 2000
Relationship: Sisters

Thoughts: Not sure if everyone remember the Kong sisters, but both of them have appeared in "The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre 2000" before (the one w/ Lawrence Ng and Gigi Lai). And what really interesting is that they act as "mother and daughter" in HSDS 2000.

Sek Sau and Sam Chan Yu Sum
Series together before: Not sure...but they performed together in 36th Anniversary
Relationship: Father and Son

Thoughts: I think most people know about this already. But some people might ask why do they have different last names? Actually Sek Sau has another offical name, where his real last name is Chan. This is the same case as Jackie Chan, where his real last name is actually "Fong".

Lee Ka Ding, Lee Wing Hon, and Lee Wing Ho
Series together before: Lee Ka Ding and Lee Wing Ho both appeared in "Blade Heart", but not sure about three together in one series...
Relationship: Father and Sons

Thoughts: Actually the entire Lee family (the four of them including father, mother, and the brothers) are all in the showbiz, and have either worked for TVB before or is currently working for TVB. The mother of the Lee brothers is Sze Ming. She has appeared in "Kindred Spirit" as Nancy Sit's brother's wife before. And of course there is a possibility later that Shirley Yeung will be an addition to the family...

Some News About Anniversary...

Not feeling all too good these days...don't worry...I did fine on my exams and mid-terms...I actually should be happy since I am done with the two-week long torture of exams, tests, and presentations...but...*sigh*...the answer is simply my Astros couldn't make into the playoff this year...how depressing...

Okay, now with some better news concerning TVB. So the "Singers Celebrating TVB Anniversary" will be held on November 4th! Many top stars will be attending, including Andy Lau, Hacken Lee, Eason Chan, Kelly Chen, Joey Yung, Twins, and Denise Ho! However, due to some conflict (?), the singers under Gold Label will not be attending. Those include Miriam Yeung, Leo Ku, Ronald Cheng, Alex Fong, Justin, Stephy and Kary...

Whatever the case is, at least we have the date set in stone, and a list of good singers will be there as well. As predicted as of now, the format will be pretty much the same as previous years, with competition of "Male Singers VS Female Singers". The captains will most likely be Andy Lau and Hacken Lee representing the boys again, and Kelly and Joey representing the girls.

New Layout!

Not much updates lately, really sorry! But anyways, I was studying for my management exam today and kind of got bored, so I put on a new layout for TVB Cafe!!! Hopefully it looks alright. I am trying to go for autumn/fall theme, although it's still really hot at my place though...

The Sheet Music for "Fortunately" is done, but I have to upload everything which can take me awhile. And plus, I have five exams this week, and two more next week, so hopefully I can put it up before time hits October.

About other sheet music requests, I don't really have much time to work on them now, but I will get my hands on them soon. I will put up a poll later and see what sheet music are "in demand"...

I'll try to update more frequently if time permits...^_^

A “TVB” License Plate

I saw something really interesting on the Hong Kong news today morning. The news is related to the “personalized” license plates that will be auctioned in mid-September at Hong Kong. According to the news, Hong Kong government began authorizing “personalized” license plates earlier in April, and now the first batch, about 1000 of them, is done and will be sold to Hong Kong citizens through an auction. Each license plate will start at a $5000 base value.

What is interesting is that one of the license plates has the words “TVB” on it. I guess it must be a devoted TVB fan that provided the idea. So sad that I am not in Hong Kong, or else I might show up on the day of the auction and take possession of the license plate…haha…just kidding, but it will be a great piece to add to any TVB fan’s collection!

And TVB has said they have no intention of bidding the license plate…good for the lucky fan then!

TVB Children Songs Award Presentation

Not sure if everyone is aware of this annual event held by TVB each year, but “TVB Children Songs Award Presentation” has been a customary event takes place each year since 1991. Personally, I was a big fan of the event when I was young, and even until this date, I am still continued to be interested with the news related to the “TVB Children Festival” every summer. Since the 2006 award presentation just took place last Saturday in Hong Kong, I decide to write a feature about this event and let you all learn a little more about it. So…read on!

This Year’s (2006's) Feature is…

“Journey to the East"...which came from slightly twisting the Classic Chinese Story "Journey to the West”. Not entirely sure about the storyline and such since I don’t watch “After School ICU” anymore, but I found out who acted which characters and such. Just look at the picture and you can see them yourself…

Tracing back…

Let me just give a little about the historical background. TVB has always tried to target each and every age group with its shows, and of course, the children population in Hong Kong could not be overlooked. As a result, TVB started a summer event titled “TVB Children Festival” in 1991, gathering different little events and special children shows to be displayed during June through August, and usually end the “Festival” with a grand finish, the big show named as “TVB Children Songs Award Presentation”.

What’s so special about it…

Just as the title suggested, the award presentation features children songs. More than thirty children songs competed in the event each year, and usually ten songs will be chosen “by the children population” and the singers who sang the songs will be awarded a trophy. The singers are usually viewed highly by the children, and the winning songs are easy reflections of what the children like about in that given year.

“Hidden Conspiracy?”…

Perhaps the best way to describe the TVB Children Songs Award Presentation is as a microcosm of the Jade Solid Gold Award Presentation, only to replace children songs with pop songs. Singers usually compete a chance to sing children songs, and when they do have a chance, the popular singers usually become the winners single-handedly. Rumors fly around each year about TVB awarding singers by TVB’s own wish, instead of following the voting results. Yet another chance for TVB to give favors again, why let it slip away, right?

Fading…

I don’t know if this is my personal feeling or not, but it just seemed like TVB Children Songs Award Presentation is no longer as bright as the previous years. I think the golden years belonged to the mid and late 90s, when lots of singers used to participate, including Leon Lai, Aaron Kwok, Miriam Yeung, Eason Chan, Kelly Chen, and more. It seems like the participants in recent years only consist of TVB’s artists and a few singers.

Looking Ahead...

So, yet another year. I read from some forums that this year’s presentation lacked of surprises once again. Wonder how will TVB fare out next year? But I'm already looking forward to hear Charmaine's, and Bernice and Myolie's new children songs.

39th Anniversary in Waiting…

Exactly three months from today will be the 39th Anniversary of TVB. Is there anyone already getting excited like me??? Probably not…but anyways, I am already on the lookout for all-related anniversary news. And as we wait another three months before the actual date arrive, let’s see what we have so far and what we can be speculating about…

--- According to Kitson at TVB Chinese News Collection, the anniversary series will be “Pearl of Orient” and “Lush Field Happy Days”. Will TVB change their mind at the end?

--- Also according to Kitson at TVB Chinese News Collection, there will be three shows celebrating the anniversary this year, including the Singers Show, an Award Ceremony, and the actual celebration that night on the nineteenth. So I guess we can conclude that the celebration on the nineteen will be performance-based if they separate the awards. But how will the arrangement fair out? What about the ratings and qualities to the shows?

--- The ballots and votings aren't even out yet for this year's awards, but do you already have your "list" in mind?

--- For the past few years, a big hit series usually dominate the award ceremony. This year we haven’t really had one yet, except probably “La Femme Desperado” and “Forensic Heroes”. But we are still waiting for “the” series…

--- There has been a lot of news about Sir Shaw Run Run wanted to sell his part of TVB’s stocks to others. Might this year’s anniversary be the last one that Sir Run Run will attend as a “boss”?

As the future is still unclear, I will be taking some time in the remaining three months to share with you some of my thoughts of the old anniversary shows, which are shows on my top TVB favorites for all time. Actually the first ever anniversary show that I have watched is the one took place in 1994, the 27th anniversary. And since then, I have been catching on every year’s show.

It will be a long story to talk about…it’s getting late now at my place, I’ll be back for more! ^_^

My Views on the Newest Releases

So far as I know, there are four new series to be released/have already released overseas and in Hong Kong recently. Anyone going to watch all of them at the same time? Not me, but here are my views on them…

War and Destiny
Main Cast: Myolie Wu, Ron Ng, Sunny Chan, Leila Tong, etc

It was claimed as one of the grand productions, but TVB decided to release it overseas first to test the market. Is TVB learning to be smart after the failure of “Dance of Passion”? But of course I don’t support TVB’s decision. Nevertheless, I am starting on this series now. Just finished one episode so far, not too much happened yet, but got me interested already. I will be looking forward to Sunny’s character development especially.

Face to Fate
Main Cast: Frankie Lam, Raymond Lam, Tavia Yeung, Selena Li, etc

Another warehouse series. Honestly, I have been waited so long for this series already, and now finally the rentals have them out. After watching the MV’s of the main theme and sub-theme, I am practically craving for the series! The main theme is sung by Raymond, and it's a really fast song. As for the sub-theme, it is a duet by Frankie and Tavia, which I fall in love with it after just listened to it once! Hope that I can get my hands on the series soon, and hope that it won’t disappoint me…

CIB Files
Main Cast: Bowie Lam, Wong He, Christine Ng, Maggie Siu, etc

Investigation type of series. Frankly speaking, I don’t like the cast too much. However, it will be kind of interesting to see what’s CIB is about. From what I recalled, Kevin works at CIB in “Split Second”, so this series will be a lot more in depth about the actual police department. Whatever the case, I will be waiting this series to air next year on JadeWorld, instead of renting it now.

Phoenix Quartet
Main Cast: Charmaine Sheh, Joe Ma, Sammul Chan, etc

This series will be aired on August 28th in Hong Kong. After seeing the trailers from sehseh’s site (thanks to her!), I am now more interested in the series. Seemed that the four generations part is really refreshing. Hope that I can watch it soon, but I highly doubt it.

Blood-related Relatives Part II

Second batch of blood-related relatives may come less surprising to everyone, but nevertheless, here are them:

Tavia Yeung and Griselda Yeung
Series together before: Shades of Truth and Vigilante Force
Relationship: Sisters

Thoughts: Metal has written a feature about the Yeung sisters awhile ago, and I agree with him about an "awkwardness" existing between the sisters as one is a lot famous than the other. But nevertheless, I hope that the relationship between the sisters will remain good despite their different statuses.

Tommy Leung Ka Shu and Toby Leung
Series together before: None
Relationship: Father and Daughter

Thoughts: Last year when Toby received the “Bronze Newcomer Award” at the JSG music ceremony, many people speculated about Tommy Leung’s intervention with the decision. Well, as we never get to find out whether it was true or not, Toby will definitely have some kind of advantage over the others when Tommy her father is one of the top executives in TVB. I haven’t gotten a chance to watch “Men in Pain”, so I can’t comment on Toby’s acting skills, but will she appear in the top five “Most Improve Award” this year because of her father?...

Tang Ying Man and Shermon Tang Sheung Man
Series together before: None
Relationship: Father and Daughter

Thoughts: Second pair of father and daughter for this round of blood-related relatives. Tang Ying Man hasn’t had a lot of screen time recently, so probably most people have forgotten about him. As for his daughter, she participated in last year’s (2005’s) Miss Hong Kong Contest, and received the photogenic award.

Wong Wei and Stephanie Wong Chung Hei
Series together before: Not sure…?
Relationship: Father and Daughter

Thoughts: Yet another pair of father and daughter, and very similar case to Tang Ying Man and her daughter. Stephanie appeared in a lot of minor roles lately, and most of the roles are ones that are portrayed to be negative to her image. She participated in 2003 Miss Hong Kong (the year when Mandy Cho got 1st place), and she didn’t even get to the top five. Personally, I don’t really like Stephanie.

Forensic Heroes Main Theme Sheets Music

Today’s my birthday! Almost can’t believe that I am 20 years old already! Thanks to those lovelies who have sent me birthday wishes and greetings! THANKS!!! =)

Anyways, I’ll celebrate with you guys with a new sheets music. This time, it features the main theme of "Forensic Heroes" sang by Frankie Lam.

Talking about the song itself, I really like the melody and lyrics, which I think match perfectly with the series. As for Frankie's performance, this is the second time I have heard him since the main theme from "The Herbalist Manual", in which Frankie didn't disappoint me. And of course this song is co-written by Tang Chi Wai. Didn't really surprise me to find out it is once again his work.

As for the score itself, this one took me some time to write, especially the beginning and the ending. The song is relatively fast, and really don't seem to go in hand with piano, but since I like the song, I decided to give it a try. And here we have the score, but I think I didn't do too good of a job.

Special Feature: Real Relationships

Many rumors come and go each day in the TVB circle, in which some of them are true while others not. While we audiences decide upon what to believe, many real relationships exist among this TVB circle. Do you know about them?

A new feature I am starting on, titled “Real Relationships”, will be about some interesting facts about TVB actors and actresses and their “hidden” relatives and companions.

I will be talking about two main categories:
Blood-related Relatives
Married/Non-married Couples

Let’s start with the first bunch of “Blood-related Relatives”…

Blood-related Relatives Part I

Natalis Chan Bak Cheung and Yuen Siu Cheung
Series together before: Women on the Run
Relationship: Half-brothers (same father, different mother, but different last names)

Thoughts: I still remember I found this out when I watched the TVB anniversary show from 1995. Ah Nat told about their relationship during one part of a game show in the anniversary. This really came to a surprise to me as they don’t look like brothers to me.

Vinci Wong Chi Yin, Kevin Cheng, and Anne Heung
Series together before: "Hidden Treasures" for Anne and Vinci
Relationships: Kevin and Vinci are cousins, while Anne is Vinci’s mother’s cousin (basically his aunt)

Thoughts: You might be saying, “What?”. Yup, that was my first reaction too when I learned this. These three people seemed to have nothing related to each other, but they turn out to be relatives. Vinci and Kevin had a performance together on a recent “Tung Wah” show, and that was when I found out about their cousin relationship. As for Anne, I heard that she told about her seniority on Vinci when the press asked her about whether they can be a pair together.

Paul Chun and John Chiang
Series together before: Not sure about TVB series, but they appeared in a mainland series before
Relationship: Brothers

Thoughts: I think most people from the elder generation know about this. I guess Paul and John do resemble each other in some angles. I still remember watching parts of the mainland series when they starred with each other. Ironically, they are enemies in the series, and went after the same woman.

Lau Dan and Hawick Lau Hoi Wai
Series together before: Kindred Spirit, Virtues of Harmony I and II
Relationship: Father and Son

Thoughts: Probably many people know about this too. I just find it quite interesting that they act as father and son in the first series they starred together. When Hawick received an award from one of the Children Music Award show, TVB also arranged Lau Dan to deliver the award to his son. Really sweet...but now that Hawick went to work for ATV, the father and son will have to be "against" each other...

Yummy Yummy Sub-theme Sheets Music

The second round of Sheets Music features the sub-theme of Yummy Yummy (Food For Life). Sang by Kevin Cheng, the song first appears in "All About Men", and later a second version sang by the girls in the series Tavia and Charmaine also turns up.

This song 三角兩面 (translated roughly by its name: Three Corners Two Sides), which I usually refer it as "Triangular Love", is a rather ordinary song I think. The tune is relatively simply, which is pretty easy to arrange for me. It took me only two hours to write the score I think. But because the tune is simple, the song is pretty catchy as well. The lyrics of the song itself ties perfectly back into the series Yummy Yummy, about the love triangle between Kevin, Charmaine, and Tavia.

Behind the Scenes: TVB Music Masters

As TVB series get on air each and everyday, audiences usually notice the actors and actresses on screen. However, those behind the scenes created a lot of impact in the overall production as well. Want to meet them?

A new feature of TVB Café: “Behind the Scenes”, where I dive into different areas of the hard-working people behind the scenes. The first ones I will be focusing on are “TVB Music Masters.”

Anyone having watched modern TVB’s series for even a short while would notice that TVB always have a main theme song to go with every series, while sometimes sub-themes are included as well. Ever wonder who wrote those songs, who gave them lyrics to make them connect to the series?

One of the young songwriters emerged in just the past few years has played a key role in recent series music production. His name, Tang Chi Wai 鄧智偉, probably might sound unfamiliar to you at this moment, but his songs are just all too familiar to you.

I first noticed his name when I brought “All About Men” CD. Afterwards when “Lady in Red” CD came out, his name is even almost printed on every page on the little lyrics booklet that came with the CD. It’s at that time that I started to notice that he has produced songs for a lot of recent series.

Just out of curiosity, I typed his Chinese name in Yahoo Hong Kong search engine and found two interviews. Not the entire articles are relevant, but here are the summaries:

- He entered TVB in 2001.
- His debut is the main theme for “Last Breakthrough”.
- He is the producer for “War of In-Laws” main theme; he pointed out that they actually wrote the lyrics part before the song, a very rare innovation in Canto music.

Special Feature: Sheets Music

When I first became a TVB fan, I have always been interested in all those lovely theme songs. Whenever there is a new series airing, the first thing I will notice most of the time is the theme song. Since I am also a pianist, the ability of playing those lovely theme has been one of my wishes. Is anyone out there have the same thoughts with me?

And now to extend my little wish, I have started to arrange sheets music for the themes and sub-themes. And opening this blog, I've decided to share with the TVB fans community out here.

But...just a few words before I hand my humbly scores out...
